The Importance of Writing for Prophetic Artists

I get it…most artists think in pictures.

Still, this is not an excuse for the prophetic artist to neglect their gift of writing. Many visual artists are naturally good at writing too but some might not realize this because their writing skill is underdeveloped. However, the proven way to get better at writing is (you guessed it) WRITE!

Let’s touch on three reasons Prophetic Artists MUST steward their gift of writing well.

Prophetic artists must prioritize making written notes of what the Holy Spirit reveals to them through his word so they can put it into practice. Additionally, its important to cultivate the habit of writing prophetic revelations they receive from God whether personally or through others.

Writing down these revelations allows God to expand on them and one is better able to test the word against scripture (1 Thes 5:20-21). We can also use writing to keep track of shift in routines in our spiritual disciplines (e.g. writing prayer points).

Journaling, can offer a safe, judgment free space to voice one’s thoughts and emotions that they would otherwise be hesitant to express out loud. The key is to be brutally honest in the writings and then ask God to show you the areas you need to pray about, make changes on or seek counsel on.

Writing can be extremely useful in honing the creative gift through planning works, documenting creative process, reflecting on creative process and assessing your creative progress as an artist. I often look back at my old process writings only to discover my tremendous growth.

If all of this seems overwhelming to you, take it in strides. Start with writing for your spiritual and prophetic development first (your relationship with God takes precedence). Then, you can slowly implement writing for the emotional and creative benefits.

My challenge to you is to implement some form of writing this week. Happy writing!
