“I remember the days of long ago; I meditate on all your works and consider what your hands have done.” Psalm 143:5 (NIV)
This week I want us to reflect. Before you start reading, open your mind, find a cozy space and go get a beverage of your choice.
Every season of being an artist looks different for me. Sometimes I enjoy art and make a lot of it. Sometimes, I question the importance of my creative gift and struggle to create. Sometimes, I don’t create at all.
Whatever season of your creative journey you’re in, it’s important to reflect on your current and past seasons with expectancy for what God will do in the future. Reflection allows us to return gratitude to God for the great parts of our journey and seek his healing and comfort for the bitter parts. Through reflection we are reminded that God is with us each step of the way (Psalm 139):
I’m challenging you to reflect on your creative journey with the following exercises.
Throwbacks Deep Dive
Look back at some of your old photos and artwork. Journal about your reactions to seeing these past memories.
(Recently, I took a look at some of my past works over the years and I was overwhelmed with gratitude at how far God has taken me on this creative journey)
Past, Present, Future A Collage
Create a photo collage (whether handmade it or digital) from found photos that resonate with your perceptions of different points in your creative journey:
- Your creative self 5 years ago
- Your creative self now
- What you perceive your creative self to be 5 years from now.
P.S. You can source photos from stock image sites or magazines among other places.
