Since we are made in the image of God that guarantees that we are inherently creative beings. Prophetic artists can learn a lot from the creative creation story that will help them develop their ow creative process.
A Snapshot of Genesis
Before there was the created world as we know it, there existed void and formlessness. Then, at the thunder of God’s Sovereign voice all that was darkness transformed:
“Let there be light!”
God Created Day and night and celestial bodies to govern times and seasons. He created the sky, waters and land and later on populated these spaces with a variety of creatures. God declared all He made to be “good.”
After God made the heavens and the earth, he formed Adam, gifted him in the garden of Eden as a home and gave humans the following mandate:
Be fruitful and increase in number; fill the earth and subdue it. Rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky and over every living creature that moves on the ground. (Gen 1:28)

The Creative Nature of Mankind
Then God said, “Let us make mankind in our image, in our likeness, so that they may rule over the fish in the sea and the birds in the sky, over the livestock and all the wild animals, and over all the creatures that move along the ground.” (Genesis 1:26-28)
What does being made in the image of God mean for prophetic artists? Let’s start by examining what the word image means:
The word image has multiple meanings:
- Exact likeness or semblance of something or someone
- a tangible or visible representation of something or someone
- a reproduction or imitation of the form of a person or thing
Essentially, being made in the image of God means that God created us to reflect/demonstrate his characteristics. This includes but is not limited to: free-will, rationality, morality and spirituality.
Since (1) we are created in the image of God, and, (2) the ability to create (creativity) is a characteristic of God, we can deduce that humans are naturally creative as well.
And this applies whether you think you have a creative gift, skill or talent.
What can we learn from God’s Creativity?
The word of God should should be the blueprint that guides your creativity. Within this text in Genesis Chapter 1-2 there are a plethora of gems we can apply our creative lives:
God’s word is an important aspect of His creative power.
Every Time God spoke his voice brought order and established and created an entity in accordance with his sovereign will.
As Creatives with the spirit of God inside us, we must acknowledge that our words carry weight in the spiritual realm and be mindful of what we speak into our lives.
We must not be idle with our words and ensure that they align with God’s will.
35 A good man out of the good treasure of his heart brings forth good things, and an evil man out of the evil treasure brings forth evil things. 36 But I say to you that for every idle word men may speak, they will give account of it in the day of judgment. 37 For by your words you will be justified, and by your words you will be condemned.” (Matthew 12:35-37)
God is meticulous and logical in His creative workflow.
God made things in a logical sequence according to what each new creation would require. For instance, before He made the celestial bodies, He made the sky that would house these celestial bodies. Likewise, before God made man, he made the physical environment that man would live in.
The design of each thing in nature allows that thing to coexist harmonically with the other elements of nature, bringing a balance to the environment. A great example of this is seen in the balance of food web in various ecosystems: if one specie of animal is removed from the web, that can have adverse effects on the entire ecosystem.
As creatives we must also strive to be intentional about how we plan our process and creative works to bring about the most functional end result.
Our works should reflect the purposeful nature of God.

God Judged His work to determine its goodness.
Throughout the text Genesis 1-2 after God creates some items, he declares them to be ‘good.’ In contrast, when He created man by himself, He declared that it was ‘not good’ and brought resolve by creating woman.
As Holy Spirit led creatives, We must be able to determine he goodness of our works and aim to produce good work. This not only applies to our art but also how we live our lives on a daily basis.
We should test our heart and works against the word of God to see where we are lacking and make resolve to produce good, and better fruit. Always strive to be intentional about the kind of works our life produces because we will be judged by God for our works.
12 If anyone builds on this foundation using gold, silver, costly stones, wood, hay or straw, 13 their work will be shown for what it is, because the Day will bring it to light. It will be revealed with fire, and the fire will test the quality of each person’s work. 14 If what has been built survives, the builder will receive a reward. (1 Corinthians 3:12-14)
God Rested after he finished creating.
By the seventh day God had finished the work he had been doing; so on the seventh day he rested from all his work. 3 Then God blessed the seventh day and made it holy, because on it he rested from all the work of creation that he had done. (Genesis 2:2-3)
If the all powerful God chose to rest after he finished His work, who are we to think we should overwork ourselves to the point of burnout? We must take time to rest from our hard work, not because it’s a nice-to-have, but because it is a commandment:
8 “Remember the Sabbath day, to keep it holy. 9 Six days you shall labor and do all your work, 10 but the seventh day is the Sabbath of the Lord your God. In it you shall do no work: you, nor your son, nor your daughter, nor your male servant, nor your female servant, nor your cattle, nor your stranger who is within your gates. 11 For in six days the Lord made the heavens and the earth, the sea, and all that is in them, and rested the seventh day. Therefore the Lord blessed the Sabbath day and hallowed it. (Exodus 20:8-11)
Main Takeaways
Since we are made in the image of God, we inherently are creative beings. We should strive to model our creativity based on God’s example by being productive with our spoken word, meticulous with our creative process, intention about the ‘goodness’ of our works and non-negotiable about making regular time for rest.
