In December 2023 I finally bought a sketch pad again.
During the previous few years, I neglected my creative gift and had put art on the back burner. My excuse remained that I was too busy building a career to make art. Still, I couldn’t shake the feeling that I had become inattentive to my passion and purpose in the process.
That was a feeling I didn’t want to keep carrying for the rest of my life.
Buying the sketch pad was an act of faith and rededication of my creative journey to God. On select days during my devotion time, I would sketch a concept related to my meditation scripture.
I remember vividly how awkward my hand felt holding a pen to draw again for the first time but I committed myself to work through the ¨ugly phase¨. Some days I really liked my drawing entry; other times I could hardly hold back the embarrassment.
As I showed up to the pages consistently, I would sense God’s presence as I drew.
Oftentimes, prophetic artistry is depicted as moments where magnificent paintings are created in worship sessions. While I definitely embrace that form, I also found that my times drawing in the presence of God alone proved to be powerful and spiritually enriching as well.
This method of bible study for prophetic artists brought other benefits I didn’t anticipate. It motivated me to be more intentional about meditating on scripture throughout the day outside of my devotion time.
I also found that I was able to retain the scriptures in my memory better. Additionally, I also began writing some scriptures in Spanish which helped me to practice my second language.
Drawing during my quiet time has definitely transformed my time in the presence of God. I hope to continue this process throughout the various stages of my creative journey.
If you’re a Christian artist I’d definitely recommend you incorporate this practice in your personal devotion time if you haven’t before.
