30 Then Moses said to the Israelites, “See, the Lord has chosen Bezalel son of Uri, the son of Hur, of the tribe of Judah, 31 and he has filled him with the Spirit of God, with wisdom, with understanding, with knowledge and with all kinds of skills— 32 to make artistic designs for work in gold, silver and bronze, 33 to cut and set stones, to work in wood and to engage in all kinds of artistic crafts. 34 And he has given both him and Oholiab son of Ahisamak, of the tribe of Dan, the ability to teach others. 35 He has filled them with skill to do all kinds of work as engravers, designers, embroiderers in blue, purple and scarlet yarn and fine linen, and weavers—all of them skilled workers and designers. Exodus 35:30-35
The above excerpt in Exodus 35 demonstrates the calling of a skilled artist chosen by God to use his natural talent and spiritual insight to create artifacts for the purpose of worshiping God. Based on the excerpt, we can note the following about the call of the Prophetic Artist:
God preordains the prophetic artist for the call.
This calling is set by God before birth as in Jeremiah 1. At the appointed time, God reveals this call to the prophetic artist, confirms it through others and continuously prepares as they go along the journey.
God bestows supernatural creativity upon the artist.
This may manifest as the prophetic artist being extremely creatively gifted. Even if the prophetic artist chooses not to walk in the prophetic call, they can still operate in their creative gift (Romans 11:29).
The prophetic artist is filled with the Spirit of God.
The Holy Spirit empowers the prophetic artist to live a life of consecration and brings divine guidance, correction and prophetic insights for their life and by extension their creativity. This allows them to set an example of righteousness and excellence to others.
The Holy Spirit gives wisdom, understanding and knowledge for the practical expression of the creative gifts.
The Holy Spirit empowers the prophetic artist to understand the natural knowledge that pertains to creative technical skills and the wisdom to apply that understanding to various projects.
The prophetic artist is given authority to teach and mentor others artists.
The prophetic artist must be willing to share the creative knowledge, understanding and wisdom they have received to others. Their service through this teaching and mentorship can also be a part of their creative ministry and/or profession.

There are many ways the creative gifts can be made manifest in the church today. Ultimately, these are the gifts that apply the use of visual art principles to meet the design needs of the church today. These include but are not limited to landscapers, architects, interior decorators and choir garment designers. Notwithstanding, the expression of the prophetic artist’s call is not always limited to the church as the Holy Spirit’s power can bring revelation and conviction to those outside of the church through art.
Main Takeaways
The calling of the prophetic artist is not one to be taken lightly. It is a holy call before the Lord that requires a prophetic lifestyle and intentional stewardship of your creative gifts. Make it your duty to seek an answer for this question about how God wants to use you creatively:
Why have you given me this creative gift and how do you want me to use it in the church and/or professional space?
